Kuikahi Village Nears Final Approval This Fall—Let’s Bring It Over the Finish Line!

Folks, we are very close to liftoff!

The Maui County Council’s Affordable Housing Committee recently and officially voted 9-0—a clean sweep!—to recommend approval for Kuikahi Village, our proposed 14-acre community located just mauka of the Honoapi’ilani Highway in historic Wailuku town. Our labor of love will now head to a discussion with the full County Council, which will have until October 14th to render a final decision on our ability to move forward.

Make no mistake—this was a vital step towards winning the ultimate approval to put shovels in the ground to support our neighbors to secure their futures on the island! We were humbled to receive kudos from several members of the committee during the latest hearing (as reported on by Maui Now), including:

  • “I personally have never seen a project with so many different varieties within it, so I applaud that and I hope that we get to review further projects similar to this one.” -Shane Sinenci

  • “This is innovative, and hopefully other developers will follow suit with this type of mixture. As [fellow Council member Sinenci] said, a nice variety of offerings to folks in a fairly wide range of affordability.” -Alice Lee

Hear, hear—and here’s to our fellow Valley Isle residents being one step closer to more permanent, affordable, available housing!

Smart Designs and a Welcoming Atmosphere

Kuikahi Village is intended to be a 100% workforce housing neighborhood, inspired by some of Maui’s traditional communities. Drawing upon the principles of smart growth and new urbanism, Alaula intends to serve as many segments of our local community as possible by providing seven total types of homes, including:

  • Tiny homes

  • Two-bedroom condos

  • Three-bedroom condos

  • Duplexes

  • Townhouses

  • Live-work units (three-bed, two-bath units with a studio on the ground floor)

  • Single-family homes

Kuikahi Village is also an infill project, which means we’ll be utilizing already-existent green spaces within an established neighborhood to create a sustainable, eco-friendly solution to Hawai’i’s ongoing housing crisis. Additionally, Kuikahi Village will include a thoughtful and well-designed layout, including walking and biking paths, a playground, a pavilion for hosting, and multiple recreational spots for outdoor enjoyment.

Below is our expected timeline towards construction:

  • Final County Approvals: Q4 2022

  • Site Construction Starts: Q1 2023

  • Applications and Lottery: Q2 2023

  • Final Permitting: Q2 2023

  • Building Starts: Q3 2023

  • Move-Ins Start: Q2 2024

Exciting stuff for sure! Speaking of, we’re also sure that we couldn’t do any of it without your ongoing support. It’s been our honor to work towards establishing more affordable housing for all our island kama’aina, and all your calls/emails/messages to the Council have been heard loud and clear.

As such, we have a request to make of you: don’t stop now! Let’s take Kuikahi Village over the goal line this month and be ready for construction in early 2023—keep letting your representatives know you support workforce housing on Maui!
