Recent Updates for All Three Alaula Workforce Housing Projects

It’s been quite a busy few months for affordable, workforce housing here on the Valley Isle—and Alaula is honored to be helping to move things along!

Most recently, the Maui County Council voted to recommend their approval for Hale Waipuilani—our new 28-unit neighborhood intended for Kihei—in June, which now moves the project forward to be heard to the full council in the near future.

The units would be constructed makua of South Kihei Road and gorgeous Waipuilani Beach Park, creating new one, two, and three-bedroom units ranging in size from 450 to 1,400 square feet, all constructed with the very best in green materials and construction techniques to give aloha to the aina. Additionally, as is true for all of Alaula’s planned neighborhoods, intended homeowners must earn between 80 to 140% of the area median income to qualify for the lottery.

Meanwhile, the Hawai’i State Office of Planning and Sustainable Development recently published a Finding of No Significant Impact for Kuikahi Village, our proposed neighborhood of 202 workforce housing units in Wailuku town.

Drawing upon the principles of smart growth and new urbanism, Kuikahi Village is intended to feature several kinds of housing—multi-family condos, duplexes, tiny homes, single-family units, live/work units—to serve as many segments of Maui’s diverse community as possible. Like Hale Waiupuilani, Kuikahi is designed to be an infill project, utilizing available green space and surrounded by exciting development to maximize existing infrastructure and minimize environmental strain.

These recent successes also highlight the ongoing movement to diversify and increase the total number of affordable units proposed for construction here on Maui, with several other projects moving through various stages of the approval process. It’s certainly an exciting time for affordable housing, and Alaula is honored to be helping our kama’aina secure their futures on the island.

Oh, and file this one under last, but certainly not least—Hale Kaiola has officially gone vertical!

We’re so excited to be making progress on these 40 workforce housing units for our patient lottery winners—and we need your help to continue advancing the cause!

We need you to share stories of your friends and family that need to have workforce housing made accessible and available.
